Are you wanting to become fluent in Motivational Interviewing?
It’s a journey, for sure!
I’ve trained a lot of people in Motivational Interviewing. I often hear participants say, “I know MI, I use it all the time.” And MI has been around a lotta years (since the early 1980’s!). Most of us have had exposure to MI skills training somewhere along the way. So it makes sense that folks feel like they “use MI all the time”- it feels familiar.
My next question is, “What do you mean by using MI?”
- Do you mean you approach your clients with the spirit of MI, a combination of compassion & acceptance, partnership & collaboration, evocation & curiosity?
- Do you mean you use the OARS skills (Open Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections & Summaries)?
- Do you mean you have honed your listening skills to catch the Change Talk, and over the course of a conversation, artfully soften the stuck talk and cultivate & build change talk around a specific goal to support your client resolving ambivalence about change?
- Do you mean you reflect more than you ask, use complex reflections most of the time, remember to provide affirmations, and always ask permission before giving advice?
- Do you mean you avoid directing, prescribing, telling, or getting ahead of your clients’ readiness level?
Usually not.
And that is what using MI means. And using MI to fidelity- (you know, the threshold of skills that is actually what all of those amazing evidence-based practice research trials have shown is effective)… THAT takes some serious practice. It’s like learning a second language.
So I’ve created a course designed to take your existing MI skills to the next level. It’s called Uplevel.
This is an advanced course in MI. We are going to hit the ground running, jumping into practice. This course is for folks who are familiar with the basics. Check out registration information if you’d like to know if this course is a good fit for you. And, you can always email me to ask!
Are you ready to uplevel your MI skills?
- Keep the burden of change off YOUR shoulders
- Work less hard, get better results
- Feel confident tackling difficult conversations & ‘difficult’ clients
- Become a more successful helping professional
- Feel more effective with your clients
- Improve client outcomes (evidence-based practice, y’all)
I hope you join me!
