What is the best Motivational Interviewing training?

The one that works best for you!

(Yes, as a Motivational Interviewing trainer, I am going to lean into partnering with you and supporting your autonomy and choice to learn MI the way you want and need to learn MI!)

All joking aside, we know that the best Motivational Interviewing training is one that incorporates experiential practice and feedback.

We learn Motivational Interviewing best by doing it!

The process of learning Motivational Interviewing has been researched! Researchers have looked at the best ways to learn Motivational Interviewing, and ultimately, experiential training that provides the opportunity for practice and feedback is the best motivational interviewing training.

The process of learning Motivational Interviewing has been likened to learning a new sport, new language, or new instrument.

You would not expect that reading a book about playing the violin or soccer or about how to speak a foreign language would equate to fluency.

You would want to get in there and play it, speak it, do it, and get feedback on how you are doing from a coach or instructor.

So no, you are not likely to gain fluency in Motivational Interviewing by watching a video, webinar or reading a book. And there are lots of videos, books and podcasts out there to support learning!

The best training in Motivational Interviewing is one that has experiential practice and feedback!

All of our Level 1 – 3 MI courses include experience and feedback. And, we developed a comprehensive MI Certificate of Advanced Practice program with additional 1:1 coaching and coded feedback! You can learn more about our Motivational Interviewing certificate program, Motivational Interviewing Certificate of Advanced Practice (MI-CAP), here!

And, we aren’t the only MI trainers out there! For a listing of all Motivational Interviewing training provided by members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), you can check them out here!

Motivational Interviewing Tip of the Week: The best training in Motivational Interviewing is one that has experiential practice and feedback! The process of learning Motivational Interviewing has been likened to learning a new instrument or language or sport– it takes experiential practice and feedback to gain fluency!
