All joking aside, we know that the best Motivational Interviewing training is one that incorporates experiential practice and feedback.
We learn Motivational Interviewing best by doing it!
The process of learning Motivational Interviewing has been researched! Researchers have looked at the best ways to learn Motivational Interviewing, and ultimately, experiential training that provides the opportunity for practice and feedback is the best motivational interviewing training.
The process of learning Motivational Interviewing has been likened to learning a new sport, new language, or new instrument.
You would not expect that reading a book about playing the violin or soccer or about how to speak a foreign language would equate to fluency.
You would want to get in there and play it, speak it, do it, and get feedback on how you are doing from a coach or instructor.
So no, you are not likely to gain fluency in Motivational Interviewing by watching a video, webinar or reading a book. And there are lots of videos, books and podcasts out there to support learning!
