Fourth Edition Motivational Interviewing

I am loving reading the new Motivational Interviewing fourth edition book! Bill Miller & Steven Rollnick have done it again!

In general, Miller & Rollnick  ,in the Fourth Edition of Motivational Interviewing, have written about MI to increase accessibility for everyone. MI can be learned by anyone, and utilized by anyone, in conversations with people about motivation and change.

Concepts are simplified and written about in a way that is intuitive and informational. I’m digesting the new book as I am teaching my life intermediate and advanced MI courses this fall, and loving it!

Here are some highlights:

  • The new definition of Motivational Interviewing in the new fourth edition is, “Motivational Interviewing is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment.” -Miller & Rollnick, 2023
  • It is recognized, after 40 years of development of Motivational Interviewing (in the fourth edition) , MI can enhance what professionals already do to help people work toward a variety of goals.
  • Many of the over 2,000 clinical trials that support the efficacy of MI acknowledge that MI can enhance or support other interventions and modalities. And, there are a ton of podcasts, books and resources on that! (Join us this Thursday for a FREE webinar on the uses of MI in victim services! Change that on the blog to the link to the page for to purchase the short course :))
  • The importance of true, deep listening is emphasized in the fourth edition of Motivational Interviewing, as the skills and techniques of Motivational Interviewing are hollow without this.
  • I just love the questions associated with each task of Motivational Interviewing in this new edition. (Previously, it was called the Four Processes of MI, now it’s called the Four Tasks!). Check them out:

If you aren’t ready to buy the new book, here is a free YouTube video on the topic! Or, join one of our MI courses for the updates!

Here is the link for the new book! (I am not selling these by the way- no conflict of interest! Just sharing MI resources with ya!)

Motivational Interviewing Tip of the Week: Considering the four tasks of Motivational Interviewing, you can look at where you are in the change journey with clients. Are you engaging with them, still establishing a working, trusting relationship? Are you focusing on what they are seeking to change? Are you exploring and cultivating their motivation for change? Or working with them on how to accomplish those changes? The four tasks of Motivational Interviewing are a great assessment tool for where you are with clients!
